Romeo- "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare

Describe ONE character you enjoyed reading about. (Romeo).  Explain how this character helped you understand an idea. (Revenge)

In this essay I will discuss the character of Romeo from the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare. I enjoyed reading about Romeo because of his extreme impulsiveness, which helped me understand the idea of revenge and the fact that it always results in bad consequences.

Romeo, a young man of Verona is a very enjoyable character in the classic play by William Shakespeare. Romeo is the only son of the Montague household- enemies against the Capulet family. He is an aggressive fighter but also a passionate lover. Romeo ends up falling in love with young lady, a daughter of the Capulets. This causes much conflict in the plot. Romeo's character appeals to young guys in this way, of passionate young love. Romeo often rushes into situations, which makes the him an impulsive character and very enjoyable to read about.

One example which is present throughout the play of Romeo's tendency to be impulsive is how he rushes in to a relationship with Juliet, who he barely knows at the time, despite the probable severe consequences. He immediately acts in his current feelings, he just goes with it. He feels everything so passionately. "Did my heart love till now?" This is a quote from Romeo when he first meets Juliet at the Capulet's party. "I'll ne'er saw true beauty till this night' says Romeo again referring to Juliet. These are Romeo's initial emotions which he immediately acted on even though she was a Capulet and he was a Montague. He didn't think about the consequences at all. "My lips... to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss" says Romeo after kissing Juliet. The fact that Romeo rushes in, creates drama in the story which is enjoyable to read.

Another example of Romeo acting without thinking the situation through much was when he killed Tybalt of the Capulets because Tybalt had just killed Romeo's good friend Mercutio. Romeo was seriously angered at Tybalt for this and rushed into the decision to murder him. This was a decision which caused extreme consequences- Romeo was banished and was to be killed if he were to come back. Also he didn;t think about how Tybalt's death would greatly hurt his family who had done nothing. With this one impulsive act, Romeo caused much conflict including his relationship with Juliet because of his banishment. "Fire-eyed fury be my conduct now". This is a quote from Romeo just before the killing of Tybalt. He expresses his fury which drives the motive for taking tybalt's life. This event caused by Romeo's impulsiveness made enjoyable reading because it changed the direction of the plot.

A final example of Romeo's quick decisions is one of the last events of the play, when he rushes to get poison to commit suicide because his only love, Juliet , seems to be dead. "Come poison, go with me to Juliet's grave; for there I must use thee". This quote from Romeo shows that he is overcome with emotions of grief and that is all he is thinking about, his feelings. The ending caused by Romeo's decisions is that both Romeo and Juliet die which is enjoyable to read even though it is sad because it is a shocking, unexpected conclusion to the plot of the play.

The character of Romeo with his impulsive behavior, risk taking, and passion helped me understand the idea of revenge and the destructive consequences of revenge. Two examples of how Romeo helped me understand the idea of revenge and its consequences are the event of Tybalt's death and the event of Romeo's and Juliet's death.

One example of how Rome's irrational actions helped me understand the idea of revenge and how revenge hurts innocent people was that Romeo made an impulsive choice to kill Tybalt because of his feelings of anger and revenge against Tybalt for killing Mercutio. This action by Romeo of revenge resulted in many bad consequences. Romeo was banished, hurting Juliet, Tybalt's family was badly hurt and ultimately Romeo and Juliet both die by killing themselves. This shows how decisions of revenge have bad consequences and make everything worse.

Another example is of how Romeo and Juliet's relationship is greatly negatively affected by the deep, violent vendetta between their families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo's decision to kill Tybalt was obviously because of the feud. This event of Tybalt's death ultimately terminates Romeo's relationship with Juliet which causes them to both kill themselves. This example of actions of revenge in the plot clearly shows how bad, bad things will come from revenge and the consequences always just make the situation worse and can hurt innocent people. The clear example of the severe consequences of revenge in the plot thoroughly helped me understand the idea.

"Civil blood makes civil hands unclean".
"Do with their death bury their parents' strife".
These quotes taken from the prologue of the play explain that there is a strong, deep feud between the two families which could only be 'buried' by the death of Romeo and Juliet. The event of Romeo and Juliet's death- caused by the vendetta would make both the Montagues and the Capulets realise that the vendetta with the other family is not worth losing their loved-ones lives. This would cause the age long rivalry, "their parents' strife" to end.
