Books read in 1EN- 2011

"The Hobbit" J.R. Tolkien

"Cat's Cradle" by Kurt Vonnegut

In the novel "Cat's Cradle" there is a secret weapon called 'ice-nine'. The whole story was about finding out about the creator of it. I found this book okay to read but it wasn't my favorite kind of book although I found some of the story quite entertaining.

"Go ask Alice" - Anonymous

I found "Go ask Alice" a bit of a depressing book to read in a way because of all the negative emotions shared by 'Alice'.
It was based on a real life story so I found it sad to read because of everything that happens to her and how she ruins her life.
Overall I think it was a good story, well written.

"The Scarecrow" by Ronald Hugh Morrieson

"The Scarecrow" was a different type of book than I amused to reading so I found it a bit strange. The story seemed very slow and I struggled to keep up with the overall storyline.

"Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry" by Mildred D. Taylor

I actually really enjoyed reading this book about a poor African-American family trying to raise their kids on a dying cotton farm bought by their ancestors. Their dad lives far from home to work on a railway to get enough money to raise their kids. I think this book approached the issue of racism very well.
Also the book had a really interesting storyline and characters.

"Around the World in Eight Days" by Jules Verne

I really liked the general idea of the novel "Around the World in Eighty Days. I like how the main character- Phileas Fogg just leaves to try to travel around the world within the space of eighty days. It's a great adventure filled with a bunch of surprises in the plot. Near the end of the story, Fogg is guilty of loot so people cut the betting on if he will return in time but once the real thief is found, Fogg is released and  the betting continues. The betters think that Fogg won't make it but he ends up completing the journey back to the reform club just in time. There is confusion about if he made it on time because he had crossed the international dateline but he did indeed win the bet in the end. Fogg gets married to Aouda. Passepartout tells Fogg that they could have done it in 78 days if they hadn't gone through India but Fogg replies that he wouldn't have met Aouda if they hadn't. It is shown that Fogg had won something more important than money by traveling around the world, he had met Aouda whom he loves and is very happy to have her.

"Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare

"Romeo and Juliet" was really difficult for me to read and comprehend because of the old english language used.
Although I enjoyed the overall story and the characters. Also it was very poetic.
